Letters from our Students

We hope you enjoy these messages from some of our students, as they recap their recent experiences with COVID-19 and provide a unique look at our programs in action. The area where we operate lacks access to a postal system, and with COVID-19 restrictions on transportation, we were not able to conduct our usual summer letter writing. However, our team will continue to distribute letters and photos, and we encourage you to continue writing to the child you sponsor. Our students look forward to reading your messages and words of encouragement!

“I hope you are all doing well amidst this pandemic. COVID-19 came as a shock to all of us, especially those of us who were planning to complete our primary education this year. We are studying in small groups with classmates nearby. We meet five times in a week, and every time, one of our teachers from Raise the Roof Academy comes to us. The teachers have helped us to revise our work and understand hard things. I pray that school will be opened soon, so that I can learn with my friends again. When in class, you get to learn from many students and share your challenges with the teacher, who helps you right away.

Pray for our teachers who have continued to support us during this time. Our caregivers send you greetings and prayers. I pray that God will restore our lives and we will live normally again. I love you. God bless you.”

“COVID-19 comes with many dangers. Schools were closed as a measure of protecting us from the Coronavirus. We now study in small groups. Our teachers ride on motorcycles and meet us in our groups. They have continued to prepare us for the Primary Leaving Examinations, which take place in November. I am thankful to Raise the Roof Academy for continuing to find ways of helping us pursue our studies. We wear masks during the study group meetings and sit meters apart. Our teachers also wear masks when they come to meet us. Hand washing is a must from everyone who arrives at the meeting venue. Many thanks to all our sponsors who sent food boxes. I pray that a vaccine for COVID-19 will be found soon! May we all stay safe and live to tell this story.”

“Here, we were greatly affected by COVID-19. All schools and most business closed. Food prices went up, and all basic needs were no longer affordable. By God’s grace no one in my village got the Coronavirus! But because of COVID-19, I have resorted to studying from home. I miss school so much. I miss the entire school environment, nice meals, and playing with my friends. I miss the teaching from my teachers and other school activities. My prayer is that schools will be opened soon.”

“How are you our dear sponsors? I am fine and staying safe from Coronavirus. I hope you are also safe. Always wash your hands with soap, and do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. That is what we have been taught so that we can avoid Coronavirus.

Thank you for the food box. My grandmother and I received food items, and we were so happy. The food has helped us to stay healthy.

We love you, and we hope you are staying safe!”

“We are trying hard to observe all measures put in place to ensure that we remain safe and free of COVID-19. Most homes have water and soap just outside the house. That is meant for hand washing for whoever intends to go inside the house. We have also stayed away from large gatherings. I do miss Raise the Roof High School very much! We had just launched our school and we began getting used to our new teachers. It is a pity that all that came to an abrupt stop. I miss my fellow students and all the other school activities like weekly Bible studies and fellowships. I just long to be in the school system again. However, all has not been lost. We formed study groups to meet together and continue with our studies. The teachers support us fully, and we get to interact with them and understand things we find challenging during our individual studies. The study groups have also helped us to support each other socially and morally.

At some point during this pandemic, food prices went up, and most food items became scarce. Some families even found it hard to get salt or soap. Many thanks to our dear sponsors, who through Raise the Roof Academy made it possible for families to get food boxes with several basic items. It was an answered prayer!”
